Crathorn Edward Isham Charlton Anne

1892 – 1917

In memoriam

Major C. E. I Charlton Anne, RFC, was reported missing and presumed drowned on April 15, 1917, age 25. He was the youngest son of Major and Mrs. Ernest Charlton Anne of Burghwallis Hall, Yorkshire. His father was an avid falconer and a founding member of the British Falconers' Club. He was the grandson of W.H. Charlton of Hesley Side, and Sir Thomas Parkyns, Bt., and a cousin of Brigadier General Charlton. At the outbreak of World War I he obtained a commission in the 6th Yorkshire Light Infantry but was shortly afterwards transferred to the R.F.C. He did excellent work at the front in 1915, but owing to an accident had to undergo a rather serious operation. Later, he undertook the training of pilots at home. His last post was that of Chief Instructor of a a school of Miltary Aeronatics. He was mentioned in despatches in January 1917. Major Anne left a young widow.
