NX14293 Posting on Death: 2/1st AUSTRALIAN INFANTRY BATTALION Prisoner of War- Stalag XIIIc Cause of Death Drowning (While escaping) Description of Paybook photograph (May 1940 NSW) of NX14293 Private Cyril Graham New (Mentioned in Despatches), 2/1st Battalion, Australian Infantry. Private New, aged 31, was captured and taken Prisoner of War (POW) whilst defending the island of Crete against the German land and airborne invasion. He and his friend NX14286 Private Arthur Ernest Wright drowned whilst trying to escape from POW camp Stalag XIIIc on 1 September 1944. He was the son of Walter and Annie Louisa New, of Dubbo, NSW. He is commemorated on the Athens Memorial Face 11. He is commemorated on the Roll of Honour in Dubbo NSW, also his name is located at panel 28 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial.
