His birthplace is sometimes rendered as Winstanley or Wigan in Lancashire. He died of wounds whilst a Captain with 2nd Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment. He is also commemorated twice in St Nicholas Church in Chawton, Hampshire (by an individual plaque and on the war memorial) as well as on the dedicatory plaque on Chawton's Memorial Hall.
