Spartan soldier, one of the 300 (technically 298) who died at Thermopylae. According to Herodotus, Dienekes was the bravest of the Greeks, and also one of the wittiest. When the Persian arrows were said to be blocking out the sun, Dienekes joked that it would be easier to fight in the shade. Following the battle, his remains were taken to Kolonos Hill along with the remains of the other soldiers who died that day.
