In memoriam

Εδώ βρίσκονται τα οστά του πρωθυπουργού Δημητρίου Γούναρη

Greek: Δημήτριος Γούναρης Twice Prime Minister of Greece (25 February 1915 – 10 August 1915 and 26 March 1921 – 3 May 1922). After the disaster of August 1922 and the rout of the Greeks by Mustafa Kemal's forces, the remnants of the Greek Army revolted in September, and the government was deposed. The predominantly Venizelist rebels, under the leadership of Colonel Nikolaos Plastiras, formed a military tribunal to try those that were considered as responsible for the catastrophe. Gounaris was one of the "Six" found guilty of treason and executed by firing squad on 15th November 1922. Gounaris was buried in the First Cemetery of Athens on the day of his execution, in the presence of a few relatives and friends, with a priest and without the presence of choristers. The funeral was casual and hasty as the revolutionary committee had ordered the burials of the executed to be completed before 3pm. His grave is located in a corner, in the area of the cemetery near Vouliagmeni Avenue. It is surrounded by a concrete parapet with an area of about 30 by 80 cm and has a rough inscription which states "Here are the bones of Prime Minister Dimitrios Gounaris."
