Bosnian Writer, Essayist, and Novelist Dževad Karahasan was born on January 25, 1953, in Duvno (Tomislavgrad), Bosnia and Herzegovina. After completing his primary and secondary education in his hometown, he studied comparative literature and theater at the University of Sarajevo's Faculty of Philosophy. He later earned his doctorate from the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb. Karahasan was deeply involved in cultural activities throughout his career. He worked as an editor focusing on cultural affairs at the Sarajevo Revue and was a playwright at the Zenica National Theater. From 1986 to 1993, he served as an assistant professor in dramaturgy and the history of drama at the Academy of Performing Arts in Sarajevo, where he also held the position of dean. Additionally, he was the editor-in-chief of Izraz , an art theory and criticism magazine based in Sarajevo. In 1993, due to the Bosnian War, Karahasan left Sarajevo and moved to Graz, Austria, where he lived for the rest of his life. He was a visiting professor at several universities in Salzburg, Innsbruck, and Berlin. He was awarded the DAAD Berlin scholarship in 1995 and taught Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian at the University of Göttingen in 1995 and 1997. He also spent the 2007/08 academic year as a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin. Karahasan worked as a dramaturg for the ARBOS – Gesellschaft für Musik und Theater from 1993 onwards. Karahasan was a versatile writer, producing plays, novels, essays, short stories, and works on theater history and criticism. His works were performed internationally, with productions staged in Austria, Germany, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Kosovo, Poland, Singapore, and the United States. He continued to divide his time between Sarajevo and Graz until his death on May 19, 2023.
