He was born in the Hokianga district , but while very young shifted with his parents to Victoria Valley where he was educated and lived the greater part of his life, following the occupation of a farm worker. He was one of the best workers and had the respect of both Maori and Pakeha. He was in Helensville when he enlisted and was in the 28th Maori Battalion, Second Echelon.
