Edward Masson

In memoriam

Aged 73 years. Born Lawrencekork, Scotland. A mind richly stored. Guilelessness and scrupulous integrity characterised a life devoted to the welfare of Greece.

Former Attorney General for Greece, Judge of the Court of the Areopagus, Professor of Greek in the Assembly College, Belfast. Masson was public prosecutor in the 1834 trial for high treason of one of the most revered national heroes of Greece's War of Independence, Theodoros Kolokotronis , requesting the death penalty. Although found guilty and sentenced to death, Kolokotronis was pardoned in 1835. On 8th October 1838 he married missionary Elizabeth Mulligan, daughter of John W. Mulligan of New York, in Athens.
