Royal Artillery

Gunner Edward Patrick McDonald The Royal Artillery 2nd Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment 16th Battery. Son of Edward & Catherine McDonald. Birth. Edward Patrick McDonald, son of Edward McDonald and Catherine McDonald, formerly Maher, was born on 10 October 1920, at 3, St. Alban's Road, South Circular Road, Dublin. His father was a Quarter Master Sergeant in the Royal Munster Fusiliers. The 16th Battery arrived at Suez on 1 September 1940. It moved to Mersa Matruh on 2 October 1940. It was moved to Piraeus, Greece in December 1940. It served in the Greek campaign from 6 April 1941 until the end of April 1941, when it was evacuated (without its guns) to Crete, arriving on 29 April 1941. It would appear that Edward died covering the retreat from Greece. The lower photograph is of the headstone on the family grave in Mount Jerome Cemetery, Dublin, on which his name is recorded His name is recorded on the supplementary list of Mount Jerome Cemetery War Memorial
