Edwin Hirst

In memoriam

Son of John Henry Hirst, of 42, Jeffrey St., Dukinfield, Cheshire. Edwin Hirst  was born at Stalybridge, Cheshire, on 15th September 1891, however the 1901 and 1911 censuses record him residing with his family in the neighbouring town of Dukinfield. He drowned when the troopship S.S.  Arcadian  was torpedoed and sunk in the Aegean Sea on 15th April 1917 by the German submarine UC-74 whilst en-route from Salonika to Alexandria, carrying reinforcements for Egypt. He was aged 25.  He has no known grave but the sea and is commemorated by name on Panel 14 of the Mikra Memorial, Thessaloniki, Greece.  He is also commemorated by name on the Dukinfield War Memorial.  his brother: 36014 Private John HIRST, South Lancashire Regiment also served
