30394 Lance Corporal Edwin James Beckett, Died of Wounds received in action, on the 9th.April 1918, Aged 25, while serving with the 7th.Battalion, The Royal Berkshire Regiment. Edwin was bornin Beedon, lived in Chieveley and had enlisted at Reading. The 7th.Battalion War Diary entry for the 8th.March 1918 reported: 'Coys worked on trenches etc by day as misty weather prevented enemy observation being made. Enemy artillery shelled BASTION with 105mm and GLENGARRY HILL with 77mm shrapnel. Casualties two ORS wounded. No patrol from this sector on the night 8th/9th'. Lated 'Reported from 79th.Field Ambulance that 1 OTHER RANK WOUNDED in the afternoon DIED OF WOUNDS at 2300 hrs'. Edwin's brother John was also a casualty of the 'Great War' as was killed in action on the 1st.July 1916 serving as 16711 with the 6th.Battalion, The Royal Royal Berkshire Regiment, Aged 20. www.findagrave.com/memorial/12366120/john-beckett Both were the sons of Alfred John and Elizabeth Eliza Beckett, of Hill Green, Leckhampstead, Newbury.
