In memoriam

Hungarian and Bohemian Monarch, German Queen. She was the only surviving child of Emperor Sigismund and his wife, Barbara of Cilli. At the age of two, she was engaged to the twelve-years-older Duke Albrecht of Austria. They were married in 1422, and her father named Albrecht his successor in the following year. Her husband succeeded her father as German king and king of Hungary and Bohemia in 1437. When her husband died, she acted as regent for her unborn son. After his birth, she was able to have him crowned with Saint Stephen's crown. The Polish nobles instead crowned Władysław III of Poland because they were afraid of the Ottoman Empire. After two years of civil war, the papal envoy Giuliano Cesarini was able to negotiate a peace contract. Władysław and Elisabeth met in November 1442 in Győr to exchange gifts. She died three days after he left Győr and was buried beside her husband. It was rumored that Władysław had had her poisoned. Władysław himself fell two years later in the battle of Varna against the Turks.
