14495 Company Serjeant Major Elmer Theodore Somerville, was Killed in Action, on the 24th.April 1917, Aged 29, while serving in 'D'Coy, the 7th.Battalion, The Royal Berkshire Regiment. The official 7th.Battalion War Diary of the 24th.April reported 245 other ranks reported Killed or Wounded. Elmer had previously attested to the Oxford & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry as 6573 on the 15-3-1905 , his occupation given as a plumber. He was 5 foot 5-5/8 inches tall, weighed 106 lbs, was of 'fresh' complexion with blue eyes and dark brown hair. His early army career did not last long as he was 'Discharged by Purchase' on the 27-5-1905. Husband of Laura Ellen Somerville (b.22-9-1890) and father to Joseph Henry John (b.2-5-1913) and Phyllis Elma Roslan (b.2-4-1915) of The Bungalow, White Rd., Woodcote, Reading, Berks., and later of Daisy Cottage, Woodcote. Son of Luke and Rosalie Somerville, of 67, Filey Rd., Reading.
