In memoriam

Greek: Εμμανουήλ Μανουσάκης Emmanouil Manousakis was born in 1898 in Kastamonitsa where he attended elementary school and then studied at the high school of Heraklion. In 1916 he enrolled in the Medical School of the University of Athens, and two years later, he continued his scholarship at the University of Lyon, where he graduated with honours. There he met and married Simone Puis, with whom he had four daughters. In 1925 he joined the Greek army, establishing the first Epidemiological Centre of the Army. He was the organizer of the Preventive Medicine Division 1925-1947, director of the Army Research Centre and Army Antimalarial Service, director of the Armed Forces Health Service, health advisor of the Hellenic Armed Forces, chairman of the Supreme Medical Council of the Armed Forces and member of the Supreme Military Staff Commission of NATO. He organized the health services of the army, vaccination, blood donation on the war fronts and hospitals, and the gigantic and successful attempt to eradicate Dengue fever and malaria in Thessaly.
