In memoriam

Emmanuel Ponsard was born 1887 in St Pierre de Méarotz under the impresssive Obiou mountain in south Isère(38) France from Germain Jérémie Ponsard and Nancy Galvin . He was the brother of Jean ,dead in Les Vosges during WW1, and the cousin of Gustave and Clément Ponsard from St Michel en Beaumont , the second also deadly wounded in Besançon battle in WW1 . In 1914 he joined the 1st Regiment Artillerie and was wounded in 1915 ..He took part to the " Expedition d'Orient " with french Artillerie lourde and was sent via Marseille to Salonique harbour in 1917 . There , he was engaged on the Macedonian front in Florina district near the Serbian border and was deployed with the "349 ème regiment d'Artillerie lourde " with italian, serbian, US and british forces against the germans and turcs . He was later wounded in Sakulevo village ( now Marina), may be near the Cerna river bridge , and died in the ambulance back to Zeitenlik camp and hospital . He is burried with more than 8000 french soldiers in Zeitenlik cemetery in modern Thessalonique in Greece.
