In memoriam

BELOVED HE LOVETH US ALL

Ernest Leonard Lindridge was born in 1892 in Hastings, Sussex. His father, Charles, was 36 and his mother, Mary, was 37. Ernest was baptized on November 27th 1892 and Ore Christ Church. He had three brothers and two sisters. We find Ernest living with his family on the 1901 census at 6 St Thomas Cottages in Hastings. His father Charles is working as a dairyman and was originally from Maidstone in Kent. By 1911 the family had moved to 32 High Bank and Ernest was working as a cashier at the provision store. From this census we also find out that Ernest's older brother Charles Percy is "deaf and dumb" since aged 2. However, he is still working as a boot repairer. Ernest served during WW1 with the Oxfordshire and Bucks Light Infantry 7th battalion. Regimental number 27428. Ernest was killed in action in Salonika on March 26th 1917 and was buried in the Doiran Military Cemetery in Greece. The inscription on his grave reads "BELOVED HE LOVETH US ALL" I managed to contact the great granddaughter of Ernest's brother Edwin Frederick Lindridge. Amazingly, she was actually a follower of the page! She told me... "Ernest was killed in Salonika, when the pack mules broke loose. He and another chap came up out of the trench to re-tether them when they were both shot. Ernest is buried in a cemetery in Greece, he is one of the lucky ones to have a named grave."
