One of the 300 (298) Spartans who died at Thermopylae. As recounted by Herodotus, Eurytes was especially brave because he wasn't supposed to fight but did so anyways. He had been stricken blind by an eye disease and was told to go home. But for whatever reason, he had a change of heart and decided to rejoin the Greeks, charging into battle blind and being killed almost instantly. In a strange twist of fate, his act of disobedience was widely commended, while his companion Aristodemus (who had also been stricken blind and told to stay home) was denounced as a coward because he followed orders and stayed home. Eurytus' remains were presumably taken to Kolonos Hill, along with the remains of his compatriots who had also died in battle.
