In memoriam

Greek name: Ευθύμιος Κεχαγιάς Greek economist and politician. He was born at the beginning of the 1821 Revolution in Parnassida, Amfissa. His father Ioannis and particularly his uncle Anagnostis had a distinct presence there. In childhood he lost his father. He studied at the Aegina School at the period of Capodistria, and then at Athens High School, where he excelled in mathematics. He turned to commerce and worked as an employee at the first merchant store in Athens that his relative, merchant Lazaris had founded. He was appointed at the National Bank at the time of its establishment in 1842. In 1851 he went to Europe and stayed for over a year in France to study the newest methods of bank credit and the various branches of the National Industry. Returning from France, he became a member of the Greek Parliament, elected in 1853 as a deputy of Parnassis. He was elected Plenipotentiary and became Minister of Finance in 1863 by resolution of the Extraordinary National Assembly. For the second time he became finance minister in 1867. He died on 24 March 1885.
