In memoriam

The Racic Mausoleum in white stone, is perched on a rise in the town cemetery. It was built by Croation sculptor, Ivan Mestrovic, in the early 1920's for the Racic family on the place of St. Rock's church from 15th century, following the will of Marija Radic. It was built from the white stone from Braè. In the whole building no other material but stone was used, except bronze for the door, bell and angel. The Racic's were shipbuilders and one member of the family, Marija Racic, was rumored to have had a relationship with Mestrovic. The Racic Mausoleum is an octagonal shaped building with an ornate entrance and bronze doors. A bronze bell in the cupola bears the inscription "Know the mystery of love and though shalt solve the mystery od death and believe that life is eternal." The interior of the mausoleum contains reliefs depicting the stages of life. The whole mausoleum is full of symbolic representing three basic stages of human fate: birth, life and death. The cemetery is in the town of Cavtat not Dubrovnik.
