Florentine Wilhelmine “Florence” Bay Sorounis

Florentine (Bay) Sorounis was born in Marstal, Aero, Svendborg, Denmark. She had departed Copenhagen aboard the SS United States and arrived in New York on June 12th, 1913, aged 18 years, 2 months. The ship manifest lists her as a maid going to Sexton, Iowa. On April 19, 1918 she was married to Harry Posziotis in Mason City, Cerro Gordo Co., IA. She uses the name Florence instead of Florentine. In August 1929 she was married to John Sorounis and they lived in Gary, Lake County, Indiana. John worked for the East Joliet Elgin (EJE) Railroad as a machinist. In the 1930 and 1940 US Census John and Florence are living in Gary, Lake Co., Indiana. The address listed in the 1945 City Directory states they are living at 1356 Van Buren Ave. in Gary, Lake Co., Indiana. According to a Report of Death Abroad for a US Citizen - Florence died in Diakofton, Aegialias, Greece on December 2, 1967 of stomach cancer at the age of 72 years, 8 months and 2 days. Her husband was also living in Diakofton, Greece at the same time. She was buried in the family vault at the Communal cemetery of Diakofton, Aegialias, Greece.
