In memoriam

The Partisans attacked Šentjošt at 11 pm on 24 July 1942, burning several farms, including the Možine farm. In the middle of the morning on Thursday, 30 July 1942 a Partisan patrol came to the Možine farm in the village of Potok near Šentjost. The family had been mowing the last of their hay that day and sowing turnips. Some Partisans entered the house and others surrounded those at work. They took the following people away: Jakob Šubic (age 34, farmer and father of four children), his wife Marjana (age 29; her youngest son Tone had been born on 11 June that year), her sister Albina Malovašič (age 23), the servant girl Frančiška Kavčič (age 17), the farmhand Viktor Jereb (age 19), the farmhand Janez Gantar (age 18), the day laborer Franz Guzelj (age 64), and his son the day laborer Jože Guzelj (age 27). While they were being led away to the woods above Potok, Jakob's five-year-old son Ivan ran after them and accompanied his father. Marjana asked to be allowed to temporarily return to nurse her son, but was refused. Five-year-old Ivan was released at dusk and they continued towards Kajndol, seizing Janez Kogovšek from the Šelovs farm, a father of 10 children, on the way. All nine were murdered in the forest near Kajndol and buried in a mass grave. Their bodies were exhumed by Village Guard forces on 7 November 1942 and reburied in the cemetery. After this, Marjana's mother Marija Malovašič cared for her orphaned grandchildren and burned-out farm. Sources: Ave Maria 36(4) (April 1944): 32. Zaveza no. 17, 29 March 2011
