Franc

In memoriam
From Zaplana. He worked as a welder for the Kranj Indistrial Association (Kranjski Industrijski Družbi, KID) in Jesenice. The family was deported to Serbia by the German authorities in 1941. Franc worked as a cobbler there and paid off his debt in Slovenia by mortgaging land in Zaplana, and the family returned to Slovenia in the fall of 1942. There Franc did forestry work, but was persecuted by the Italian authorities, who forced him to choose between prison camp or joining the Village Guards. He chose the latter to remain with and support his family. His wife Zinka supported the family through sewing. The family evacuated to Carinthia with Home Guard troops at the end of the war, but was returned by the British. Franc was separated from Zinka and his son in Carinthia, and both he and Zinka were murdered at the Teharje death camp. Source: Kržan, Vanja. "Teta mi je dala hrbtenico."
