On the night of 31 March 1884, two fair vendors, France Petkovšek and Martin Šinkovec, were attacked a quarter hour from their homes in Zaplana. Petkovšek, a 29-year-old, suffered a knife wound to the throat and he died half an hour later. His companion Martin Šinkovec, a 45-year-old miller and father of six children, was first robbed of 29 gulden and then suffered multiple cuts to the neck and shoulders.
