VX5562 Posting on Death: 2/7th AUSTRALIAN INFANTRY BATTALION, he was killed in action in Crete Greece. Vic. Paybook photograph of VX5562 Corporal Francis James Whelan, 2/7th Battalion, Australian Infantry. Corporal Whelan, aged 24, died while defending the island of Crete against the German land and airborne invasion on 29 May 1941. He was the son of George and Ethel May Whelan, of Lilydale, Vic. He is commemorated on the Athens Memorial Face 11. (Photograph supplied by the Army's Soldier Career Management Agency.
