King's Shropshire L.I. Captain F.R.E. Savory
Rank: Captain Regiment: King's Shropshire Light Infantry, 2nd Battalion Died: 5th December 1915 Age: 22 years old. Captain Francis Richard Egerton Savory was the eldest son of Arthur Egerton Savory and Margaret Mary Clara Egerton Savory (daughter of Richard Snead-Cox) of 20 Hartington Mansions, Eastbourne, East Sussex. Educated at St Anthony's School, Eastbourne, East Sussex and Stonyhurst College, Lancashire. Gentleman Cadet at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Commissioned into the King's Shropshire Light Infantry as a 2nd Lieutenant on 14 Feb 1912. Promoted to Lieutenant on 29 Apr 1914 and to Captain on 1 Oct 1915. He joined the 1st Battalion on commissioning in Fermoy, Ireland. When WW1 started the 1st Battalion was stationed in Tipperary, Ireland. They were under the command of 16th Brigade, 6th Division and landed at St Nazaire on 10 Sep 1914 and immediately deployed to Chemin des Dames on the River Aisne. They fought in the Battle of the Aisne (13-28 Sep 1914). They were then moved north to near Armentieres and fought in the Battle of La Bassee, Armentieres and Messines (10 Oct-2 Nov 1914). He was wounded in action in November and invalided home. On recovery he joined the 2nd Battalion in France. The Battalion moved with their Division to Salonika, leaving France on 13 Nov 1915 and arriving 4 Dec 1915. He was wounded in action at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli on 1 Dec 1915 (attached to 6th Battalion the South Lancashire Regiment) and died of his wounds on the Transport Ship Massila on 5 Dec 1915. He was buried at sea off Mudros. He is commemorated on the Doiran Memorial, Doirani, Regional unit of Kilkis, Central Macedonia, Greece. He is also commemorated on: The Stonyhurst College WW1 Shrine, Stonyhurst, Ribble Valley, Lancashire. The Stonyhurst WW1 Roll of Honour in the Stonyhurst War Record book. A memorial plaque in St Ethelbert's Church, Bargates, Leominster, Herefordshire. The Eastbourne WW1 Roll of Honour in the Town Hall, Grove Road, Eastbourne, East Sussex. The Broxwood (Holy Family) Roman Catholic Church WW1 memorial, Herefordshire Unitary Authority, Herefordshire, England.
