Huddersfield's Roll of Honour: 1914-1922 The following extract is from Huddersfield's Roll of Honour: 1914-1922 (2014) by J. Margaret Stansfield: THORPE, FRANK. Private. No PLY/16054. Royal Marine Light Infantry. HMS Exmouth. Born Cowcliffe, Huddersfield, 27.9.1897. Son of George William and Maud Thorpe, Eastbank, 119 Cowcliffe Hill Road, Huddersfield. Educated Hillhouse Council School and Huddersfield Higher Elementary School. Employed as a clerk by Messrs Chiltern, Wrigley and Company, wholesale clothiers, Viaduct Street, Huddersfield. Attended Fartown Trinity Wesleyan Sunday School. Enlisted in January 1913. Was attached to HMS Exmouth. Took part in fleet operations in the North Sea, at the Dardenelles, and Salonica, Greece. Killed in action ashore at Athens, Greece, on 1.12.1916, aged 19 years. Buried PIRAEUS NAVAL AND CONSULAR CEMETERY, GREECE. Grave location:- Grave 19. ROH:- Cowcliffe Wesleyan Church; Fartown and Birkby War Memorial.
