Franz was born in Apfeldorf (Jabuka) now part of Serbia. After the war he was held in the Rudolfsgnad concentration camp, (now the town of Knicanin) along with many other ethnic Germans. His wife Julianna survived the camp and was eventually resettled in Solingen, Germany.
