Flight Sergeant Air Bomber Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve Royal Air Force 40 Squadron Regimental Number 1393275 There are very few records available for Flight Sergeant Frederick William Arthur Head. He was apparently the son of Frederick Charles Head and Alice Lillian Price, who married in the London Borough of Southwark in 1917. In May, 1944 Royal Air Force 40 Squadron was stationed at Foggia Main Base in Italy. At 21.18 hours on 7 May 1944 a Vickers Wellington aircraft carrying Leslie Frederick Dutton, Royal Canadian Air Force, and 4 crew members from the R.A.F. set out as part of an air operation to bomb the Ploiesti oilfields in Romania. There was no further contact after departure. The Allied Control Commission in Romania confirmed that the aircraft had been shot down, and 4 crew members were buried at Vartoapele de Sus Teleorman, Romania. The sole survivor, Flight Lieutenant H. D. Calvert, R.A.F., was taken prisoner by the Germans and held in Camp 13, Romania. King Michael o
