Father Gabrijel (Gabriel) Humek, O.Cist, was a Catholic priest, Cistercian monk of Sticna Abbey, and a renowned artist of Slovenia. Born Crtomir Humek in Bohinj, he entered the Cistercian Order at Sticna in 1922, and completed his study of Theology in 1933. He then went for advanced studies to Mogila Abbey in Poland, and from 1937 to 1939 he studied painting at the Krakow University Academy of Arts. With the start of World War II, he left Poland and then continued his study of painting at Zagreb, Croatia, finishing at the Fine Arts Academy in Ljubljana under the tutelage of Professor Gojmir Kojs. Painting only in his spare time at Sticna Abbey, Father Gabriel initially specialized in landscapes, in the style known as Magic Realism. His large body of work, over 400 paintings in his lifetime, has been on exhibit numerous times, and also published in several books. Many of his paintings can now be seen in the Slovene Museum of Christianity at Sticna Abbey.
