BENNETT George William. Military Cross. Lieutenant. 1st Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment, attached 5th Battalion. Died 29th November 1918, aged 31 years. Son of Richard and Mary Bennett of The Cottage, Glentham, Lincs. Commemorated KIRECHKOI-HORTAKOI MILITARY CEMETERY, Greece / Glentham WW1-Tablet / Glentham WW1- Roll ---------- Awarded the Military Cross: Lt. George William Bennett, York & Lancs. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He personally carried out a reconnaissance when there was great difficulty in establishing connection between the company he commanded and the units on his flank. When the attack, in preparation for which he had been disposing his company, began to develop, he led his men with great gallantry against strong detachments of the enemy without any preliminary artillery barrage, and gained his objective. His example and energy inspired his men, who were tired with previous fighting, to renewed efforts, and owing to his leadership they were able to accomplish a difficult task. Gazette Issue 30901 published on the 13 September 1918. Page 68 of 206 ---------
