Georgios “Giorgos” Chelmis

Merchant and theatrical entrepreneur, husband of actress Marika Kotopouli. Born in Cairo in 1891. He studied at the Commercial School of Halki (Heybeliada, Turkey) and the London School of Egomaniacs. Initially he worked in industry and commerce and from 1919 became involved in Greek theatre. In 1924 he wed Marika Kotopouli with whom he had worked in theatre and film companies, both in the theatre Kotopouli Omonia Square and the REX theatre on Panepistimiou Avenue, Athens. He was three times general manager of the National Opera, in 1938 - 1939, 1949, and 1957.
