Gertrude was born on 16.8.1882, the daughter of Alexander Buchanan Munro and Mother Emma Phillis Munro nee Jenkins of 5 Gillies Street, Alfredton, Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. Parents: Alexander - Born 1861 Smythes Creek, Victoria - Died 30.12.1930 Alfredton Married in 1882 to Emma - Born in 1863 Ballarat - Died 1929 Ballarat Siblings: George Alexander - Born 1884 - Died 1885 Charlton Ethel Lille - Born 1887 Charlton - Died 21.4.1968 Ballarat Alice Isabel - Born 1888 Ballarat - Died 2.3.1954 Ballarat Ruby Phyllis - Born 1892 - Died 10.8.1964 Ballarat Kathleen Iris - Born 1895 Ballarat - Died 1908 Ballarat Gertrude enlisted on 16 August 1916 at Melbourne, Victoria as a Sister with the Australian Army Nursing Service (WW1). Service Number AANS, Sister. Described on enlisting as 34 years old; Nursing Sister; single; lived at parents address; 5' 5" tall; 136 lbs; medium fresh complexion; blue eyes; brown hair; Church of England. Gertrude was admitted to the 43rd General Hospital, Salonika, Greece on 1 October 1918, seriously ill from Pneumonia and Malaria. Gertrude passed away at the 43rd General Hospital, Salonika, Greece, on 10 October 1918, aged 36 years. Her remains were buried at the Mikra British Cemetery in Grave 591. Medals: British War medal (46188); Victory medal (45656); Memorial Plaque and Memorial Scroll (985685).
