During the German-led invasion in 1941, the Jewish community of Kishinev, Moldova, was nearly annihilated. Many Moldavians fought in the ghettos with the Nazis murdering 53,000 out of the 65,000 inhabitants of the city. The monument, which is part of the Jewish Holocaust Memorial, is dedicated to the memory of those who died for freedom in World War II.
