In memoriam
Giuseppina Simicich Niccoli was born 10 Feb 1885 in Mali Lošinj, present-day Croatia, according to her baptismal record. She was baptized Giuseppina Marcella Margherita by her parents Giuseppe Simicich of Olib and Maria Budinich Simicich of Veli Lošinj. Giuseppina was their only living child who did not immigrate to the United States permanently. (During this period, Mali Lošinj was referred to as Lussinpiccolo.) Giuseppina married Matteo Nicolich (Niccoli) in Mali Lošinj on 29 May 1907. The couple had a child, Gianni Niccoli (1923-2016). They may have had another son, Stelio (1926-1927), but those records are currently unavailable from Croatia's Archive. Giuseppina's husband died in 1932. We are unsure when she moved to Genoa; however, her baptismal record reflects her death there in 1956. The record does not state the location of her burial, but she is named on the headstone in the Sv. Martin cemetery in Mali Lošinj with her husband and parents. It is possible the inscription is a memorial to her there, alongside her family. Note: There is also a baby listed on the headstone, Stelio Niccoli (1926-1927), but we are uncertain if he was also Giuseppina and Matteo's child.
