Flight Lieutenant Pilot Distinguished Flying Cross Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve Royal Air Force 40 Squadron Regimental Number 118554 Gordon Wallace Williams was born in Cardiff, Glamorganshire, Wales in 1922. He was the son of John Wallace Williams and Winifred Mary Lambert. In May, 1944 Royal Air Force 40 Squadron was stationed at Foggia Main Base in Italy. At 21.18 hours on 7 May 1944 a Vickers Wellington aircraft carrying Leslie Frederick Dutton, Royal Canadian Air Force, and 4 crew members from the R.A.F. set out as part of an air operation to bomb the Ploiesti oilfields in Romania. There was no further contact after departure. The Allied Control Commission in Romania confirmed that the aircraft had been shot down, and 4 crew members were buried at Vartoapele de Sus Teleorman, Romania.
