1942, July during the first battle of El Alamein he becomes a Prisoner of War and on August 15th in the Libyan port of Benghazi he boards the "Nino Bixio" an Italian transport ship with 3,200 other POWs - 160 of them New Zealanders. One day out of port on the 17th the "Nino Bixio" is hit by two torpedoes from the British submarine HMS Turbulent. 336 men are killed -118 of them New Zealanders. Contributor: Dolly (50626672)
