Moldovan Politician. He served as the last First Secretary of the Moldavian Communist Party from February 5, 1991 to August 23, 1991. He began his career as a librarian and later rose within the ranks of the ruling Moldovian Communist Party. He served in various party positions before becoming the First Secretary of the Moldavian Communist Party in February of 1991. He went on to serve in this position, the highest leadership position in the then Soviet republic of Moldavia, until August 23, 1991, when the party was outlawed by the government before the Moldovan Declaration of Independence on August 27, 1991. He later served in various political positions in the new country including Ambassador to Romania, Greece, and Cyprus and Member of Parliament.
