Helen Dooros Tsoumpas

Helen Tsoumpas, 81, Grand Forks, ND, died Thursday, May 25, 2006 in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks. Helen (Dooros) Tsoumpas was born July 29, 1922, the daughter of William and Catherine (Wawbus) Dooros in New York, NY. As a child, she moved with her family to Halandri, Athens, Greece, where she was raised and educated. Upon the completion of her education, she returned to New York City, and was employed in retail sales. Helen married John G. Tsoumpas in The Holy Church of St. Demetrios, Greek Orthodox Church in Jersey City, NJ on May 27, 1948. Following their marriage, they moved to Grand Forks, ND where they raised their three children. John and Helen owned and operated John's Drive-In and Café and John's Steak House in Grand Forks. She resided in Grand Forks until the time of her death. Helen was a member of the Evangelismos Annuciation Greek Orthodox Church in Grand Forks and was an active volunteer with the American Heart Fund. She loved her home, children and grandson. On many occasions, she returned to Greece to visit her family. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed preparing Greek dishes and desserts for her family and friends. She was an avid bowler and curler. She is survived by, her daughter, Cathy J. Tsoumpas, Reno, NV; her son, John J. Tsoumpas, Grand Forks; sisters, Fifi Tsopanelis, Stella Antonatos; brothers, James Dooros, Nicholas Dooros all of Halandri, Athens, Greece; a grandson, Taylor Vogt, son-in law; Tom Vogt, both of Coral Springs, FL and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a daughter, Effie Vogt and former husband, John G. Tsoumpas. Memorial Services: 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 30, 2006 in the Gregory J. Norman Funeral Chapel. Family Greeting: one hour before the services in the funeral chapel on Tuesday. Interment: Greek Orthodox Cemetery, Halandri, Athens, Greece, at a later date.
