Henry Luther Preece was born in the June quarter of 1882 in Llandaff, Cardiff. He was the son of Llewellyn Preece and Elizabeth Jenkins. He married Annie Mabel Aitles in Cardiff in 1908 and they had one child, Gwenda Mavis Harris nee Preece (1909 - 2001).
