Henry Marden

In memoriam

Missionary to Turkey under the auspices of the A.B.C.F.M. Graduated Dartmouth College, 1862 and Andover Theological Seminary in 1869. Married (1) Sept. 10, 1869 to Mary L. Cristy and sailed for Turkey the following day. Mary (Cristy) Marden died at Aintab, Turkey on Oct. 1, 1874 leaving two children. Married (2) October 1, 1878 to Alice M. Kingsbury who died October 17, 1879 in Kerhan, Turkey Married (3) December 28, 1882 to Etta C. Doane, a teacher in the Girl's College at Marash. Was in Turkey from 1869 to 1875 when he returned to the US and had pastorates in New Hampshire and Vermont. He returned to Turkey in 1878 and in 1890 while on his way back to the US for leave, died of typhus in Athens, Greece. The American consul at Athens wrote of his grave as "His remains rest in the beautiful Greek cemetery, almost in the shadow of Hymettus on the one side and the Acropolis on the other, with the blue Aegean sea lying just beyond. We could as for no dearer resting place for our mortality when we have worn it out."
