Hivzija Hasandedić

In memoriam

Hivzija Hasandedić (born July 1, 1915, in Jablanica, Bosnia and Herzegovina – died October 19, 2003, in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina) was a renowned Bosnian historian, scholar, and intellectual. A polyglot and expert in Oriental languages, he dedicated much of his life to studying historical documents from the Ottoman period and beyond. His work involved both academic research and field studies, where he investigated historical monuments, folk traditions, and local heritage, engaging with community members and local experts. Hasandedić's most notable work is  Muslim Heritage in Eastern Herzegovina , which documents the cultural legacy of Bosniaks in the region. His research spanned various disciplines, including theology, ethnology, literature, and museology. He was a passionate archivist and historian who meticulously preserved the cultural heritage of Herzegovina and neighboring regions, including areas historically inhabited by Bosniaks, such as Imotski, Vrgorac, and Makarska. Born in Jablanica, he graduated from the Gazi Husrev-Beg Medresa in 1935 and later from the Higher Islamic Sharia-Theological Academy. From 1954 until his retirement in 1976, he worked at the Archives of Herzegovina, focusing on preserving Muslim heritage. Throughout his career, he published 430 bibliographic works and collected a wealth of materials, including documents, manuscripts, and inscriptions, contributing significantly to the preservation of the region's cultural history. In recognition of his scholarly contributions, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree by the Džemal Bijedić University in Mostar. He also began his public literary career with a poetic debut,  Night Worship , in 1934 under the pseudonym Muhamed Hivzi. Hivzija Hasandedić passed away in Mostar in 2003 and was buried at the Sutina City Cemetery in Mostar. His legacy remains influential in the field of Bosnian historical and cultural preservation.
