In 251, Hostilian was declared co-emperor along with his brother Herennius Etruscus and father Decius. Following the death of Herennius and Decius in battle, the army on the Danube declared Trebonianus Gallus as Emperor. This likely happened on 1 July 251. Hostilian initially ruled alongside Trebonianus before dying under unclear circumstances; he may have been murdered on the orders of Gallus, but it is also speculated that he succumbed to plague. The death date of 30 July takes into account the news of his death to reach Gallus, which was known on August 13.
