Hubert Henry Lyster Richards

In memoriam

Rank: Second Lieutenant Regiment: Connaught Rangers 5th Battalion. Died: 7th December 1915 Age: 23 years old Born in Dublin in the summer of 1892, Hubert was the eldest son of Sir Henry Richards, K.B.E., K.C., and Lady Maud Lyster Richards (née Smythe). They had married in Dublin on the 20th August 1891. Sir Henry was formerly Senior Crown Prosecutor of Counties Mayo and Roscommon, in Ireland, Puisne Judge of the High Court of Judicature N.W. Provinces, India 1905-11, and Chief Justice 1911-19. Hubert had five younger siblings, Enid, Patricia, Robert, Mervyn and Creenagh. A younger brother Edward was born in 1900 but died the same year. Hubert was educated at Marlborough College from 1906-1909. In 1912, he attended the University of Edinburgh to study medicine. Whilst at University he was a member of the Officer Training Corps. On the outbreak of war Hubert attested for the army at Southampton on the 4th August 1914. He was enlisted as a Private in the 9th Hampshire Regiment. On the 28th December 1914 he was granted a commission in the 5th Connaught Rangers, this being announced in the London Gazette dated 2nd January 1915. In December 1915 Hubert was at Kosterina in Serbia, in charge of machine guns during two days of action on the 6th and 7th of December. He was killed in action on the latter, the 7th December. Hubert was Mentioned in Despatches in December 1915 after his Colonel recommended him 'for distinguished service' As his body was not recovered he is commemorated by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission on the Doiran Memorial in Salonika, Greece. Hubert is also commemorated on the Roll of Honour at both Marlborough College and the University of Edinburgh. He is also commemorated on his father's headstone at St John the Baptist Anglican Church Cemetery, Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. He died in 1928 from a gunshot wound.
