Whitcombe was also awarded the Belgian Croix deGuerre. He died of sun stroke. Hugh Martin Donald Gore Whitcombe: He was born in Samford, Ipswich, Suffolk, in 1894 and His parents were John Walker (b. 1860 in Cheshire), and Katherine Louisa (nee Winnall; she had been born ca, 1861 at Tilwin, Hertfordshire) Whitcombe, who had married 21 June 1883 in Kingsland, Herefordshire, England. He had at least three brothers and one sister: Harold Gore, b. 1884, Winnall Gore, b. 1886, Muriel G., 1888 (d. 1892), and Sydney Stewart G., b. 1899. In 1901, he was 7 years of age and lived at Sevenoaks, Kent, with his mother, who was noted as a boarding house proprietess, and brothers Harold Gore, 16, Vinnall G., 14, and Sydney, 1. His grandmother Elizabeth Vinnall, 65, also lived with them, and there were two boarders as well; Thomas Clare, 51, a 'scholastic tutor,' and Arthur Young, 65, a retired woollen merchant. In 1911, he lived in Coventry and was noted as an unmarried 'engineer pupil' at a motor car works. He had left Liverpool, England, 17 February 1912 on the Lusitania. He was listed as an unmarried chauffeur, aged 22. He had recently lived in Coventry, England, and his mother lived at Budbrooke, Seven Oaks, Kent, England. His final destination was 269 Aperado Cocorreo, Havana, Cuba, where he had a friend, Cenaro Carnardo (spelling of the name?). Mr. Whitcombe was 5'8'', had dark hair and dark eyes. In 1915, he had recently resigned from his job as a chauffeur in Havana, Cuba, and was now en route to England to join the British Army. He survived the sinking of the Lusitania. He died on 23 July, 1920, in Kalamaria, Thessaloniki, Greece. Courtsey of Peter Engberg-Klarström.
