In memoriam

Inez Louise Abbott was born July 20, 1869 in Fairfield, Lenawee, Michigan USA. She later moved with her family to the Holt and Lansing areas of Ingham County, Michigan USA. Inez graduated from Lansing Michigan schools in 1887. She then received a BA (1895) and MA (1898) from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Washtenaw, Michigan USA. She also studied in Rome, Italy at the American School of Classic Studies (1902-03). In 1905 Inez was employed as a high school educator Oak Park, Cook, Illinois USA. It is most likely during this time where she became more familiar with missionary work abroad. In 1907 Inez was selected to become the Principal of the American School for Girls in Samokov, Sofia Bulgaria. From the years 1907-1926 she worked hard on behalf of the missionary school. During trips back to the USA, Inez would arrange speaking engagements to raise awareness and funds for the school in Bulgaria. She was known to win the hearts of the audience with her gracious manner and frank way of speaking of herself. Inez became friends with Queen Eleanor of Bulgaria and in 1914 traveled with her through the USA. The Queen was interested in the USA training school for nurses and would eventually set up the Red Cross in Bulgaria. In 1926 Inez died of pneumonia while working in Bulgaria. She is buried in the Evangelical/Catholic section of the Central Cemetery in Sofia, Bulgaria. Inez was well loved and respected by all who knew her. Especially her friends at the American School for Girls in Samokov, Sofia Bulgaria. The school still operates today. A special statue of Miss Inez Abbott and a building, Abbott Hall, have been erected in her honor. Inez Louise Abbott never married. She is my Great Great Aunt.
