Romanian Greek Catholic Bishop. Inochente Micu-Klein was educated in Jesuit institutions and was installed as the Greek-Rite Roman Catholic Bishop of Transylvania in 1729. In this position, he pushed for emancipation of Romanian serfs, claiming they were entitled to the status of nation promised to those who converted to Catholicism. To further this goal, he founded several Greek Catholic schools which became centers of Romanian nationalism. These efforts angered Habsburg Empress Maria Theresa, and Micu-Klein was exiled to Rome where he died and was buried in 1768. In 1997, his body was repatriated to Romania and reburied in the Greek Catholic Cathedral in Blaj, angering many Romanian Orthodox Christians who felt that he was spiritually one of their own.
