Irena Birsa

In memoriam

Irena Birsa was born into the Slovenian community of Melbourne Victoria Australia on 20 August 1961. She attended Coburg Primary School then Mercy College, Coburg and completed her studies in 1979. Irena then graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from La Trobe University in May 1984 and quickly attained a Postgraduate Bachelor of Education in March 1985. She became a high school teacher and a promising Slovenian studies scholar whose work was published in a number of international journals She continued her studies and for her Masters of Education she researched a thesis on Slovenian immigration to Australia. She was posthumously awarded the degree of Masters of Education from La Trobe University in March 1994. Her sad and tragic death caused by an epileptic fit occurred on the 24th April 1991. Irena died in Ljubljana, Slovenia where she is now resting in peace buried in Ljubljana Žale Central Cemetery. Irena is buried with her father Alojz who passed away on 10 October 2007...she was his only daughter. Irena left behind her mother Marica and her half brother Frank. Irena married in Melbourne Australia but her marriage unfortunately didn't last and she and her husband soon divorced. She remained single until her untimely death. Irena and I were actively involved in the Slovenian youth community when we were young and we enjoyed attending and sometimes hosting the annual Slovenian youth concert in Melbourne. Irena would introduce the contestants in Slovenian and I in-turn in English. Irena's goal in life was to find her own place in this world and I hope that she is now resting in peace. Irena was my friend and I want to remember her for the wonderful person she was. Rest in peace my dear Irena
