Roman Catholic Cardinal. Milasul Mare born Iuliu Hossu frequented the seminaries of Cluj and Budapest and later at the University of Vienna and the Pontifical Urbanian Athenaeum de Propaganda Fide in Rome, earning doctorates in philosophy and theology. Ordained priest on March 27, 1910 by his uncle, Msgr. Vasile Hossu, bishop of Gherla, he finished his studies in 1911 and successively served as protocolist, archivist, librarian and vicar and secretary to his named uncle. Military chaplain to the Romanian soldiers in the Austro-Hungarian Army during the Great War, at the early age of thirty two Hossu was elected bishop of the see Gherla of the Byzantine-Romanian Rite on April 3, 1917 by Pope Benedict XV succeeding thus his late uncle. Receiving his episcopal consecration on December 4, 1917 in Blaj, he was named bishop of Cluj-Gherla on June 5, 1930 when the see was transferred to Cluj.
