In memoriam

Ivan Hojnik was born 21 March 1877 in Eis (Carinthia), Austria (Slovenian: Led pri Rudi). He was ordained a priest on 20 July 1902. He served as a chaplain in Eisenkappel, Austria (Sln. Železna Kapla) and Globasnitz, Austria (Sln. Globasnica). He founded the Globasnitz Slovenian Cultural Association (SKD Globasnica) and the savings and loan bank in Globasnitz. He served as a priest in Koprivna, Slovenia from 1905 to 1941. There he founded an elementary school in the rectory next to the church, where he taught as many as 70 pupils until 1936. He also acted as the municipal secretary for the Municipality of Koprivnik, where he played a role in laying out the roads, building an electric power station, and installing water lines. He was also engaged in photography and farming, cared for the sick, and even pulled teeth. In 1941, German forces transferred him to Stična, where he died on 29 October 1943.
