Izet Nanić

Military Figure. He received recognition as a Bosnian Army brigade commander during the Bosnian War of Independence in Bosnia and Herzegovina between 1992 and 1995. Izet Nanić served as a Brigadier General in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Born into a Bosnian Muslim household as the second of seven sons to Rasima and Ibrahim, he completed his secondary military education in Zagreb in 1984 and graduated from the military academy in Zagreb in 1987. He married Safija Remetic on August 6, 1987, and they had three children. Nanić began his military service in the Yugoslav People's Army, or JNA, as a lieutenant of the RV PVO in Kragujevac. In early 1992, he left the JNA and played an active role in organizing the defense in Bužim, forming the Headquarters of the Territorial Defense (ŠTO) and later commanding the ŠTO Bužim. He founded the 105th Bužimka Strike Krajina Brigade, later known as the 105th BUMB - 505th Viteška mtbr. He led this brigade in various offensive and defensive operations of the 5th Corps of the ARBiH during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. His younger brother Nevzet was killed in action on June 30, 1992. He was killed in action five months before the Dayton Agreement ending the Bosnian war. A monument was erected in his honor, along with his brother Nevzet, in Bužim. Nanić was posthumously awarded the "Order of Heroes of the Liberation War" in 1998 and was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General. To commemorate his contributions and those of the 505th Knight Mountain Brigade and all the martyrs in Bužim, an annual event called "Freedom Days of the Knight City of Bužim" is held from August 4 to August 15. He was also decorated with the War Award Golden Lily on August 14, 1994. Nanić is revered among Bosniaks as a renowned commander, as his brigade played a pivotal role in liberating and securing numerous cities and towns, such as Velika Kladuša in Operation Tiger, and Sanski Most, Bosanska Krupa, Bosanski Petrovac, and Ključ in Operation Sana, bringing them under Bosniak control.
